Yes, in an effort to advance my love of live music Jamie and I have tickets to John Mayer/Sheryl Crow tonight at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Now I've never really been a fan of Sheryl Crow, but I've had many people tell me that Mayer is amazing live, so we decided to see it for ourselves.
As far as mayer is concerned, I wasn't really wowed by his first few albums. Sure they were catchy [in a fomulaic pop sort of way], and had some lyrical jems, but there wasn't that something that kept me coming back again and again. That was until the John Mayer Trio disc Try!
I had heard that Mayer was an amazing guitar player, but I had never really seen it displayed in studio. With the Trio album, even Mayer had to say that he was finally shedding off the "pop" image and exploring music that was much more authentically him. One listen and you'll hear it - the brotha knows how to play. [It also doesn't hurt to have garnered props from the likes of B.B. King and Eric Clapton. Mmmm, not too shabby.]
When the new disc was about to come out, I heard that included on the disc was a nod to Hendrix with a cover of Bold as Love, a pretty bold move to say the least. It was the first track I went to after downloading it - and it was amazing. His version is way capable. The disc as a whole is pretty good as well. It's odd to find a disc where your favorites are buried at #8 and on, but alas... so it is.
So we're looking forward to the night, if for nothing more than being out together, enjoying a margarita, and taking in some live music.
More to come.
