Solid, bro. This is one of those passages that agnostics/atheists claim to talk about how messed up the Bible is.

The irony is that the Bible is messy. (Dang... stupid postmodern vocabulary!)

And yet it is... it's a messy mystery that we wrestle over and yet simple enough that a child can understand it.

You did a great job of bringing some context to the text... and sometimes we need to know what the Bible doesn't say in order to understand what it does say.

Thanks for posting on this. I would love to see more bloggers reflecting on Scripture, especially with some of the tough passages. I am just wondering these days just how much we tend to sanitize the Word, and dehumanize the people in them. We practically forget that they were humans, making bad choices like us. As for God in this text. I have no idea. Thanks for giving me some reflection on this passage. I know that I will be thinking about this.

It's comforting to know that I can come to a text, and sometimes just have to throw up my hands in the air.

I appreciate Ben Patterson's words in his book Waiting: Finding Hope When God Seems Silent. He asserts that the text, the biblical characters are more of a mirror for us, than a model...reflecting back to us what it really means to wrestle, or wait, or triumph, etc.

Okay..I'm rambling.

Thanks for sharing.

I have taught on this passage several times and it is always challenging. Especially with youth.
