For those of you wondering if I had forgotten how to post, yes... we did in fact make it back safe and sound from Kauai. It was an amazing week of hanging out with just my bride on what is perhaps the most unspolied of all the Hawaiian islands. My friend Jon, who's the student ministries pastor at Lihue Missionary Church, put it best when he said the island is the most "non-exploited" Hawaiian island. How true.
It was our second trip to Kauai. We've been to Oahu a few times and Maui a few times, but there was just something about Kauai that blew us away. We spent the better part of the week driving the island in Jon's convertible Mustang in search of secluded beaches, amazing snorkling, and a little piece of ourselves.
Mission accomplished.
We spent a fair amount of time in Hanalei on the north shore, where we kayaked the Hanalei River up into these amazing thick overhanging trees. We drove to the west side of the island up into the Waimea Canyon to this lookout that was like a mini-Grand Canyon, including an 800 foot waterfall. We noticed that the road continued on from there and decided to follow it [like you do... "I wonder where this thing finally winds up?"]. At the end, we found the Kalalau Lookout - this killer 4,000 foot view from the top of a mountain all the way to the ocean below. We snorkled at Tunnels [on the north shore] where we followed a giant sea turtle.
One of the trip highlights was getting in the water with Jon and riding [if you can call it that] some amazing break near Po'ipu. [There's a reason why the best surfers in the world come from Hawaii... the waves are consistently good and big, not like home.]
Ate some great food.
Drank some great Mai Tai's.
Read a few good books [which I'll blog about a bit].
And got some serious sun.
So we're back now. The tribe missed us, literally littering the walls of the entry way and our bed room with homemade "Welcome Home, Mom and Dad" posters - including people I presume were us wearing a bikini/board shorts and snorkling, all with food and drink in hand! [Jamie's Mom, who watched the kids for us, was pretty glad to see us too.]
The best poster by far, was this one Josh made on a piece of posterboard. It had California on the right side, with the word "Us" with an arrow pointing to So Cal, and a quite nicely crafted version of the Hawaiian islands on the left, with the words "Mom and Dad" and an arrow pointing to Kauai. The only issue? The Big Island was like a fourth of the size of California!
Yeah, it's good to be back. Both Jamie and I have been a bit sick since we've gotten back, hence the lack of posting. But we're beginning to bounce back... albiet ever so slowly. Did quite a bit of thinking about the rhythms of my life... what they have been and what I want them to be. It was good to bounce some of those thoughts off of Jamie. She had great insights [as usual]. It's really quite amazing how God sounds just like my wife.
More to follow.
